Before each round of the WRC I'll find a classic clip to get an idea of what the rally is all about, and it might be helpful when picking drivers for the Fantasy WRC. Portugal is all about the weather, which can change from dry, dusty conditions to pouring rain, mud and rivers running across the stages. This year has seen a lot of rain before the event, just like in 2001. Although the event has moved further south in later years, the conditions are pretty much the same.

Rally Flashback: 2001 Rally Portugal

Tommi Mäkinen had a flying start to the 2001 season. The Mitsubishi driver won in Monte Carlo, and led in Sweden before hitting a snowbank. In his 100th WRC-event he would be first on the muddy roads of Portugal, while looking to add another victory under his belt. Close to his home country, Carlos Sainz looked like the main challenger, and the 2000 world champion Marcus Grönholm also needed a win here.

Other drivers include the winner in Sweden, Harri Rovanperä, Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Petter Solberg, Didier Auriol, Francois Delecour, Markko Märtin, Freddy Loix and Toshi Arai. Sadly, no drivers in this video enter this years rally.
