Bookshelf. Park bench. Girlfriend-repellent. Whatever you call it, it's been the easiest way to spot a Subaru STi or Mitsubishi Evolution for over a decade. And like it or not, it's the rear spoiler that single handedly gives the STi and Evo a foul odor of immaturity to those outside of the enthusiast world.
See a car with a big spoiler? Naturally, it must have an accompanying loud muffler and bet it sounds like a can of bees. Bet the driver revs the engine when parked, blows through stop signs and weaves through traffic. Sounds like I'm talking about a high school kid, right? We were all teenagers once. We didn't care about what others thought. We did our own thing. Haters gonna hate. We were invincible. Now they say YOLO.
Be yourself, they say. Your car is an expression of who you are. Surely not all Corvette drivers are middle aged men. Pricks aren't found in every BMW and Audi driver's aren't all cocks, Jeremy.
the marvelous rear spoiler is the identity of the Evolution and STI that should not be lost
Sure, both the Evolution and the STi were available without the spoilers but who the hell wants that? The wingless STi was called Limited because of the limited attention it received. The Evolution could also be had without a spoiler if you bought the RS trim. The RS trim also came without a radio, sunroof or power windows. It also looked like a donkey.
What I'm saying is the marvelous rear spoiler is the identity of the Evolution and STI that should not be lost. EVER. I cringe at the sight of a wingless STi or Evolution. Sorry, I do. Performance be damned, an Evolution or STi without the rear spoiler is no Evo or STi to me.
In a world where image is everything, do you risk the first impression over your choice of car? I know what you're thinking. You're saying in your deepest, manliest voice, "I DO WHAT I WANT. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK. SCREW THE WORLD."
The way I see it is if you are going to own an Evolution or STI, you might as well do it while you're young. When you get older you might just care a bit more about what you drive says about you.
Sooner or later you will start caring about first impressions. You might even ask yourself this question, "Do I grow out of the Evolution and STi or just remove the spoiler?"
