AUDI A5 SPORTBACK 1.8 TFSI - Oppositelock Review

I, as an enthusiast, have never been much of a fan of Audi, even though they practically own Circuit de la Sarthe, they have never achieved to speak to to me in an exotic language as the two other big German auto makers have, they have always been leftover, collected dust in the boring part of my memory, and been looked at with doubt, you might even agree with me, and I would fully understand, but hear me out, never judge a book by its cover. If you asked me two weeks ago if I'd ever buy an Audi in a million years, my answer would be no, with a capital "N", and I would probably rant about how I would never drive a FWD car, that exceeded the price of a second hand AMG. Although my dear friend and artist knew about my situation, that I had to get a new car, he invited me to the local Audi dealership on a Sunday, I agreed and we went, I ended up test driving the Audi A5 Sportback 1.8 TFSI and instantly felt in love, this is how I ended up in my least favourite brand.

The car as such is not what you would call exiting, it's very normal to look at, and it isn't even a rare sight, as a couple of them roam my neighbourhood. Although every time I get out of the car to do my everyday living, I always look over my shoulder to get one last glance at it, and every time I end up having a smug grin on my face like I had stolen my favourite candy without anyone noticing. This is what a car is all about, making you smile, even when you're not driving it, we'll get back to the driving part later on. I have around 5 kilometres to work, I have owned the car for 2 weeks, I usually have 6 men snapping their neck to have a look at the car every morning, I even had an elderly man acknowledging my car by giving me the thumbs up, while he yelled "Nice wheels!" reactions I only thought could be had in a supercar, small happenings like these makes up for everything. This is the closest enjoyment I have had on my morning trip since the M3, and the A5 produces around 280 less horsepower, who ever said more power equals more fun? Well it's still true to some length, but, but, but, this comes really close to the same fun-to-be-had- ratio as the M3.

AUDI A5 SPORTBACK 1.8 TFSI - Oppositelock Review

Some might be asking why I didn't choose the Coupé version, as the platform is built for the A5, one simple answer is that my girlfriend is due to give birth in August, and what better kid hauler is there to be had than a small sporty 5 door "coupé", to add even more to the bowl, the legroom in the back is amazing, it's not far from the legroom you can have in an Audi A6 sedan, and the 480 litre big trunk is just as amazing. I can actually drive down south, in a sleek looking "coupé" which is spacious all along. It might all sound like the ultimate compromise car that exist, and it might be, but it really pulls it off in every aspect, you want power, you want legroom, you want something spacious, you want something small, you want something big, you want something good looking, it ticks all the boxes off, and this is from a person who have never loved Audi for anything else than their racing reputation.

The car is capable of a pretty decent top speed, it's capable of around 230 km/h, and even at that speed it's as quiet as can be, well, if you compare it to a Maybach it might be a bit noisy but if you compare it to a W211 E320 it does it just as well. The only thing to complain about really is the that it can be a little bit twitchy if it gets hit by strong winds, but it's nothing to write home about. All in all it's a fun FWD drive car, with a lot of power, and a lot of fun to be had. The Audi A5 Sportback is a cool looking HOONIGAN machine, which can look good, and be spacious at the same time. It's a rare combo, but Audi really pulls it off, in every way possible. This might be the most complete car in the whole segment; it definitely is the most complete car I have ever owned.

Nothing I have ever driven is more composed and steady as this machine. If Audi keeps their game up, and continues to produce vehicles with the same care and affection as the A5 has gotten, they can achieve my full respect, and probably some of yours too.

8/10 - Best car I have ever driven.

AUDI A5 SPORTBACK 1.8 TFSI - Oppositelock Review

Compared to my Mercedes E320, the A5 keeps up, surprisingly, even in comfort, although the A5 cost around half as much. This is without a doubt the most car you can get for your money. (A proper, updated review will be in the making of the Merc)
